Finding Mirrorball - "Turn Those Lights Out!"
Share
From its inception, Mirrorball Cards was meant to help fans share memories of compelling live performances of favorite bands and foster the kinds of debate that encourage those fans to seek out moments that must be heard - even if only on recording after the fact.
One of the best live acts on the road today, My Morning Jacket's always-dynamic performances have reached a new level on recent tours. Few current bands demonstrate the ability to meld so many distinct styles into such a fluid mix, pulling nightly from songs across their entire discography. That breadth is celebrated here, with cards that attempt to document the many peaks of their superlative 2024 touring effort, highlighting early deep cuts, tour-defining covers, and (of course) their all-time classics.
With the ability to dive deep into their back catalog at any given moment and commitment to switching up setlist night after night, there's no rock n' roll band (I'm sure) that's as vital and thrilling on stage as MMJ is right now. Imagine writing a song like 'One Big Holiday' and having the wherewithal not to play it at the close of every show. The group played 115 unique songs across 30 gigs in 2024, and while not a "jam band" in the traditional sense, stretched several tunes beyond the 20' mark and took wild left turns into unique, one-off cover versions inspired by time and place.
The cards in their first Mirrorball set document 18 performances across almost as many shows, pulling singular moments from gigs loaded with many of them. Kicking the year off with back-to-back, multi-night runs of no repeats at One Big Holiday (3 nights) and the Fillmore (4 nights) into a dozen co-headlining shows (with Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats), many in markets that had not been visited since the pandemic (at least), the band showcased its ability to perform everything at the highest of levels. As a result, choosing a single moment each night was often tricky, as many of these cards attest.
Thanks to the power of Nugs.net, most of the tour is available to revisit. Several highlights are also on YouTube where fan-recorded videos help reestablish the sense-memories of those moments.
